I want to let you in on a little secret about becoming a leader… We find what we look for. And I’m not talking about how we can find our car keys when we’re in a rush to go somewhere. Let me explain what I mean.

You Have Agency

Throughout life, we are changed, molded, and shaped by the things we do, the things that happen to us, the people around us…We are deeply influenced by the different jobs we held, the leaders we encountered, the communities we lived in, journeys we went on, and relationships we formed.  Our experiences shaped and changed us. But there’s one important thing to remember: you also have the power to change, mold, shape, and create yourself. You’re the owner of your life, so you’re in charge of you. While certain circumstances or experiences may be out of your control, there is something that you can always control: your reaction. How you interpret things has a huge impact on who you are and what’s important to you. Instead of letting external events to shape you, turn your attention to your interpretations and allow them to influence the choices you make and the journeys you take. Realizing that you have the power to affect your own life, and be affected by the world, helps put things in perspective. Having the belief in yourself to be able to make a positive impact creates the courage to grow.

Find the Opportunity

Coming back to that secret I shared with you… what it really means is to simply open your eyes. Any experience, situation, or circumstance, whether ‘good’ or ‘bad,’ pleasant or unpleasant has something to offer you…depending on how you look at it.  Whether or not you believe that there is opportunity for growth and change inside everything we experience, you will be much more likely to experience that growth if you are looking for it.
